- In a word: Breathalyzer – “Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.” Similar to devices used to determine if someone is intoxicated, breathalyzers are being used to determine if someone has an illness by detecting subtle chemical changes in a person’s breath. Machine-learning algorithms can identify patterns in breath samples and use these unique “breathprints” to identify diseases such as lung cancer, liver disease, tuberculosis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. Researchers at Ohio State University recently applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an emergency authorization for breathalyzer that could determine if someone has COVID-19. You can read more about the development of breathalyzer tests here.
