- In a word: Breakthrough – “We’re in uncharted territory.” A breakthrough infection happens to an individual who was fully vaccinated against a virus. We know that breakthrough infections for COVID-19 are rare, but they can happen. The good news is we know that the COVID-19 vaccines are very effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization, or death. In fact, only 195 of the 4.9 million New Jersey residents who have been fully vaccinated have been hospitalized due to COVID-19. The bottom line –being fully vaccinated is key to protecting yourself against severe illness in the rare instance of a COVID-19 breakthrough infection.
