Cooper’s Fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a C, down from a B in Spring 2021. Cooper missed a B by 0.07 points. This is a very disappointing and unacceptable result.
The major diver for our grade reduction was due to a new Leapfrog metric called Patients Safety Indicator (PSI-90), which accounted for 15% of a hospital’s overall score and is based upon 2018-19 data. The PSI-90 has 10 different components. Cooper unfortunately scored below the mean on 4 components, which happened to make up 65% of the PSI-90 score. Work is being done on all of those areas to improve our scores.
Quality and patient safety remains a top priority at Cooper. Our quality and safety teams and clinical teams have done extraordinary work in making Cooper a safe place for patients to receive excellent care. Accordingly, Cooper has been receiving a number of national quality awards, including U.S. News and World Reports Regional Top Hospital designation (top rated hospital in Southern New Jersey) and Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for three years in a row putting Cooper in the top 5% of hospitals across the nation for patient safety.
We will continue to strive for top quality and safety ratings from every national health care ratings organization. We are confident our Leapfrog grade will improve.
