Co-CEO Message – September 28, 2023

What You Should Know This Week:

  • This week is National Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Week. Thank you to our dedicated APPs for providing high quality, patient-centered care.   • Week on the Wards. As part of their education at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, first-year medical school students gain early exposure to clinical hospital medicine and hospital operations during their week on the wards, or “WOWs,” at Cooper. From October 9 through October 20, 2023, the students will be moving throughout the hospital in both clinical and non-clinical areas during all shifts.   • Cooper’s Center for Innovation received a $100,000 grant from the Foundation for Health Advancement to develop a new medical device that will aid physicians performing cardiac catheterizations and related procedures. The device was invented and developed by vascular and endovascular surgeons Jeffrey Carpenter, MD, Chairman and Chief of the Department of Surgery at Cooper, and Katherine McMackin, MD, MS, Director of Vascular Surgical Research at Cooper.   • Give ‘em pumpkin to talk about. Back by popular demand, it’s time to get creative. The annual pumpkin decorating contest is starting soon with a new theme. Look out for the contest email next week for additional details.
  • Come climb with us! Join the Cooper Climbers Club and stay physically active by taking part in monthly climbing challenges. Take the stairs at work, at home, and everywhere else you go for a chance to win prizes! The first challenge starts on October 1, 2023. Click here to read more.
  • Get your wellness on this fall. Carebridge Corporation, Cooper’s employee assistance program, is offering several free, online support sessions through October 2023. Click here for a full list of sessions.

Reminders:

  • Cooper’s 2023 Flu Vaccination Program has begun and will continue until Thursday, December 7, 2023. You can view the flu shot clinic schedule here. For more information about the flu clinic, click here. The new COVID-19 vaccine will also be available at our flu vaccination clinics starting the first week in October. Team members can get the new COVID-19 vaccine free at our clinics. If you have Cooper health benefits for your family, you and your family will have no out-of-pocket costs for the new COVID-19 vaccine no matter where you receive it. If you have other health benefits, you may have out-of-pocket costs.
  • Cooper Security town halls coming in October. Join representatives from Cooper Security and local law enforcement agencies to learn more about security improvements that have been implemented at Cooper based on team member feedback, followed by a Q&A session. Click here to read more.
  • On Thursday, October 5, 2023, team members are invited to a screening of HBO’s “Bleed Out” documentary from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the CMSRU auditorium. “Bleed Out” chronicles one family’s experience with medical errors; the program will be followed by a panel discussion.   • Cooper will host the first New Jersey Social Determinants of Health Hackathon. The event will explore innovative ways to leverage health information technology to better engage at-risk populations, improve access to care, and address issues of equity and chronically poor health outcomes for underserved and marginalized populations at both the local and state level.   • National Hispanic Heritage Month started September 15. This special month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.   • September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. While suicide prevention is important year-round, this month provides a dedicated time to inform and engage health professionals and the community about the warning signs of suicide and how to prevent it. Click here to read more.
  • Sepsis Awareness Month. Help save lives by raising awareness of the leading cause of deaths in U.S. hospitals – sepsis. Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. It affects an estimated 49 million people worldwide each year.   • National Preparedness Month. Disasters and emergencies can happen at any time. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Ready.gov, and Cooper’s own Division of EMS/Disaster Medicine are valuable resources to help you stay prepared.   • Mindful Mondays. Join Cooper’s Compassion and Resiliency Experience Program to learn how to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, and live more presently.
