What You Should Know This Week:

  • Cooper received the 2023-2024 Star Performer recognition from the American Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Own the Bone® program for the seventh consecutive time. We are one of approximately 280 health care institutions nationwide that have joined Own the Bone and taken initiatives to ensure osteoporotic fracture patients receive the highest level of treatment and care.   • Congratulations to retired Colonel Kirby Gross, MD, FACS, the 2023 recipient of the American College of Surgeons Foundation’s Distinguished Philanthropist Award – the Foundation’s highest and most significant honor. To read more, click here.
  • The Cooper Foundation recently received a $40,000 donation to support ovarian cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. The generous donation was made by the Rupp family in memory of their loved one, Susan Marie, who lost her valiant eight-year battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 52 in 2010.   • Cooper’s 2023 Flu Vaccination Program began yesterday and will continue until Thursday, December 7, 2023. You can view the flu shot clinic schedule here. For more information about the flu clinic, click here. The new COVID-19 vaccine will also be available at our flu vaccination clinics starting the first week in October. Team members can get the new COVID-19 vaccine free at our clinics. If you have Cooper health benefits for your family, you and your family will have no out-of-pocket costs for the new COVID-19 vaccine no matter where you receive them. If you have other health benefits, you may have out-of-pocket costs.
  • Yesterday was National IT Professionals Day, which recognizes the information technology professionals who make modern day living a little more manageable for us all. Thanks to our dedicated Cooper IT team members for the critical role they play in keeping our organization up and running.
  • Garage Upgrades. Last month, Cooper began replacing the barrier gates in the Hospital Garage, Sheridan Garage, Newton Avenue Lot, and 101 Haddon Avenue Lot.   • Join the 8th Annual Sickle Cell Awareness Walk on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, click here.
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month started September 15. This special month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.   • This week is National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. Thank you to Cooper’s rehabilitation professionals, who are dedicated to helping people live their best lives despite illness or injury. To read more, click here.
  • September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. While suicide prevention is important year-round, this month provides a dedicated time to inform and engage health professionals and the community about the warning signs of suicide and how to prevent it. Click here to read more.
  • Next week is National Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Week. Throughout the week we will recognize the unique roles and importance of our APPs in providing high quality, patient-centered care. To see events planned for next week, click here.
  • Cooper Security town halls coming in October. Join representatives from Security and local law enforcement agencies. The group will discuss security improvements that have been implemented at Cooper based on team member feedback, followed by a Q&A session. Click here to read more.

Reminders:

  • On Thursday, October 5, 2023, team members are invited to a screening of HBO’s “Bleed Out” documentary from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the CMSRU auditorium. “Bleed Out” chronicles one family’s experience with medical errors; the program will be followed by a panel discussion.   • Cooper will host the first New Jersey Social Determinants of Health Hackathon. The event will explore innovative ways to leverage health information technology to better engage at-risk populations, improve access to care, and address issues of equity and chronically poor health outcomes for underserved and marginalized populations at both the local and state level.   • Sepsis Awareness Month. Help save lives by raising awareness of the leading cause of deaths in U.S. hospitals – sepsis. Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. It affects an estimated 49 million people worldwide each year.   • National Preparedness Month. Disasters and emergencies can happen at any time. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Ready.gov, and Cooper’s own Division of EMS/Disaster Medicine are valuable resources to help you stay prepared.   • Mindful Mondays. Join Cooper’s Compassion and Resiliency Experience Program to learn how to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, and live more presently. All team members are welcome to drop in – no experience is necessary, and no registration is required. There was a very successful turn out for the first session last week.   • Graduate Medical Education residency and fellowship programs celebration is planned for September 22, 2023, to thank all those who oversee GME’s daily operations.
