Dear Cooper Team:

Happy Valentine’s Day. We hope everyone is having a good week. Thank you for all you are doing to care for our patients, community, and each other.

What You Should Know This Week:

  • Congratulations to Young Ki Hong, MD, Cooper’s new Division Head of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Hong will be replacing Umur Atabek, MD, who has led the division for more than 25 years and is transitioning to an administrative leadership role in the operating rooms. We extend our best wishes to Dr. Hong as he guides the growth and advancement of our surgical oncology program. To read more, click here.
  • Another Top Doctor Recognition. Congratulations to John Porter, MD, on being recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Black Doctor for the second consecutive year. This distinction honors outstanding clinicians whose shared backgrounds and experiences enhance the connections they make with their patients. Thank you, Dr. Porter, for serving as an inspiration.   • Cooper Plays Big Role at American Heart Association 2024 International Stroke Conference (ISC). Dr. Tudor Jovin chaired the 2024 ISC, which is the world’s premier conference “dedicated to the science and treatment of cerebrovascular disease and brain health.” A number of Cooper physicians and medical students were presenters, including Khalid Hanafy, MD, PhD, Jane Khalife, MD, MS, and Pratit Patel, MD; Cooper resident Savanna Dasgupta, DO; and CMSRU medical students Manisha Koneru, Karan Patel, Mary Penckhofer, and Linda Zhang. Congratulations to our team members and medical students for their work and for representing Cooper at such a prestigious event.
  • This Week is Solidarity Week for Compassionate Patient Care. Cooper Medical School of Rowan University’s Gold Humanism Honor Society is leading Solidarity Week celebrations that promote the special bond of trust and compassion that patients and clinicians share to result in the highest quality of care. To learn more and see how CMSRU is celebrating, click here.

  • State of Race in Behavioral Health. Join Cooper’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health on Friday, March 8, 2024, as they explore the current state of race and racism in the field of behavioral health at their Rise for Equity event. Learn new tools to discuss race and racism with patients while respecting their diverse backgrounds, and how to apply these tools to help patients from marginalized communities cope with racial stress and trauma. To read more, click here.
  • It’s season. Cooper Community Outreach hosted a “Love Your Heart” health fair to celebrate American Heart Month. For more information, click here.
  • Career Fair for Food and Nutrition and Housekeeping Positions. Help spread the word about Food and Nutrition and Housekeeping positions available at Cooper.   • Attention Cooper doctors. The online deadline to nominate an outstanding Cooper colleague for New Jersey Monthly’s 2024 Top Doctors list is Sunday, February 25, 2024. To cast your vote, click here. Only physicians may vote, and must enter their medical license number.
  • Spread the word. Cooper is once again offering an annual summer extern program for students pursuing a nursing degree. Applications will be accepted through Friday, February 16, 2024. The program begins June 17 and ends August 3, 2024. Click here for more details.
  • Cooper Story Slam is back. Hear storytellers share their experiences of “When the Unexpected Happens” on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at noon in the CMRSU Auditorium. For more information, click here.
  • Guess the guest through our Mindfulness and Mystery series. This series is a virtual option for engaging in mindfulness exercises led by a “mystery” Cooper team member.
